Snowshoe Heaven, northern Purcells

It’s been 27 years since scribe Jeremy Schmidt and I and our better halves skied across the amply snow-covered alpine meadows of Bald Mountain to produce a story on a brand new backcountry hut by the name of Purcell Mountain Lodge. I hadn’t realized at the time what a perfect location this palatial, micro-hydro-powered lodge is in for the new breed of snowshoers who are looking for spectacular scenery in mellow terrain (bordering Glacier National Park) that has a minimum amount of exposure to avvy slopes. Snowshoe guide Andrea Petzold invited me to join her and her guests for several wunnerful days of snowshoe action in springtime POW! Not only is this a lovely place to wander in winter, but Andrea will be taking hikers there this summer for bear-watching amidst the alpine flowers.
