Joining Mountain Communities

Nov/Dec ’05

As a by-product of spending 5 months over the last 3 years in Ladakh in northern India, and shooting The Magic Mountain, we’ve made many friends over there.

Three such people are Cynthia Hunt, Phuntsog Stanzin and Sonam Norboo. We were happy to host them in Canmore for 8 weeks, as part of an initiative of the Canmore Rotary Club, Alberta Wildrose Foundation, the Canadian Rockies Public Schools, and the Ladakhi NGO HEALTH Inc.

The project is called Joining Mountain Communities, and it offers a series of unprecedented educational opportunities, both in our primary schools and public health centres for Ladakhis. As a followup, Canadian experts in the field of primary education and remote health care will travel to Ladakh in the coming years, building a sustainable cross-cultural opportunity that will benefit an ever increasing number in both the Rockies and the Himalaya.

See www.health-inc.org for details of how you can help the people of Ladakh cope with the rapid change in this new millennium.
